Witty. That’s the first word that probably pops into most peoples heads when they first hear a Butterfingers tune. It appears that witty is a word that emanates throughout Butterfingers as a band in general and their vocalist ‘Evil’ Eddie Jacobsen is no exception.
When asked who a few of his favourite Australian artists were; “Pro Hart, Brett Whiteley, Hazel Dooney” and which artists influnced the band you may wonder…? “Picasso, Matisse, DaVinci. All the greats.”
Of course coming from a band who brag ‘Your Mamma’s on the top of my things to do list’ and ‘Fuck I’m good just ask me’, I should have bloody known. The bands popular single ‘Yo Mamma’ gets a laugh out of the best of us but have you ever wondered what the boys mothers think of such boasting?
“My mum loves it. I think she is just generally stoked that I actually ended up doing something with my life. There were a few years where I think she kinda thought I would just die in a puddle of my own vomit. It could still happen I suppose.” Positivity: always a good thing!
The last time Butterfingers were in Tassie was last year when they hit the stage at the Falls Festival playing in the early arvo. The guys weren’t sure how the crowd would react and the set up itself wasn’t exactly what they expected.
“My first impression was, ‘Is that really the fucking stage?’ because it was like a platform with like a corrugated iron sheet sitting on top of it. After I got over that it was awesome. The crowd was great because they all got into it and moshed around in the sun and the heat etc. It’s quite rare to get people to go off that much while its still daylight,” he says.
Eddie cites Tim Rogers famous ‘performance’ at the Falls as one of his most memorable music moments; “like nothing I had ever seen. Sorry to remind him if he’s reading this but fuckin hell I’d never seen anyone onstage performing as fucked up as that. And in terms of entertainment it was 10 out of 10. People were running to see it when they heard how slammed he was. Very Rock and Roll.”
A music interview can’t go without the token ‘fuck’. When asked how their gig at Brisbane’s Valley Fiesta got shut down Eddie responded, “‘it was way over crowded and there was not enough security so the cops came over while we were playing and requested that we ask the crowd to chill out…in our song “Sorry” we have a section where the crowd chants “Motherfucker” at the top of their lungs. Its just part of the show but the cops seemed to think that we were directing it at them so they shut us down… Motherfuckers.”
"It hasn’t been all fun and games for Butterfingers. Recounting the crews’ worst gig Eddie shudders.
"Easy. Nundah bypass opening. Our support acts were a children’s girls choir and a Dixieland jazz band who were all 70 plus. The audience consisted of a granny who was death staring us from the bus stop and a woman who attempted to do “The Worm” but cracked her chin open in the process and had to go and get stitches. $400. Cash Money. High Rollin’.’ Well it really is all fun and games!”
How does Eddie describe Butterfingers sound?
“Maybe it’s just Butterfingers. It‘s hard to imagine a band these days that just sounds like themselves.”
Butterfingers new single Fig Jam is out now.
