Sprung Monkey 'Spit The Winkle'

The blistering heat of a Summer afternoon in San Diego doesn’t hinder Steve Summers from Sprung Monkey, the band immortalised by the magical world of TV (Buffy 1st ep.) and movies (Van Wilder, Ten Things I Hate About You), taking some time out to catch up with The Dwarf. Just to let Australia know they are still alive, still producing quality music and preparing to tour here very soon.
Staying together for more than a decade must mean they have some trade secrets “Well one of the guys is my brother (Mike Summers – Guitar)… and we still play together every other month or so, but we all have our own projects as well, which has kept us going”.
New projects on the horizon and promise of a new record label has seen the guys back to writing some new music and look towards recording a new album. “We just thought now is a good time to get some new stuff together and especially with the new opportunities with a new record label…it just seemed like the timing was right, so hopefully it will all come together and we’ll at least get a few more years out of it”
Touring alongside Unwritten Law will mean plenty of shows around Australia in August. “We have been rehearsing heaps so that we can put on a really good show in Australia, we love Australia…and I can’t wait for the colder Australian weather” Summers confesses.
It's no wonder that Sprung Monkey love Australia when our beloved Australians have shown of their ‘party tricks’ at post gig shindigs. Lets just say the ‘tricks’ involved garden hoses and creating sprinkler effects. “I have always tried to figure out how to work that term (‘Spit The Winkle’) into a lyric”. Summers laughs as he recalls witnessing the bless-ed event.
As well as our infamous antics Sprung Monkey are looking forward to playing shows with and hanging out with an Aussie audience again; “We are going to come down there with Unwritten Law and i'ts going to be a lot of fun”
If offered the chance to time travel Steve Summers ponders a decides “I think I’d like the days of Buddy Holly…I think the music was really great, but I just like the lifestyle. The world didn’t seem as crazy as it is now. I’d be really into the rock and roll, making all the girls scream and shout, I could be like Daddy-O’”
