The Pictures

The strokes are different. The colours a weird shade - but the rock is still the same.

Joel Hamilton-Foster takes on Davey Lane from The Pictures, but this time there is no photos or artwork. Just good old rock music.

Jet. Whether you love them or you hate them, they have opened a doorway for Beatleesque 60’s inspired rock to break through into the mainstream once again.

Davey Lane’s other band You Am I has always been on the forefront of the Australian rock scene.

The Pictures, however, are a different breed.

”I guess as a result of shared influences people will make the comparison,” Lane says, “we all cook with the same ingredients but use different pots, if you will!”

After releasing their debut album Pieces of 8 and a couple of EPs, The Pictures have just begun to take full effect.

Born out of boredom in between tours for You Am I, Davey started to jam out a few covers with some of his mates, and formed The Pictures.

“I didn't know how serious it'd get until we discovered we had a couple o' good songs under our belts.”

Now after their debut release The Pictures are serious. Let’s hope they wear the same belts the next time they belt out some tunes.

I asked Davey why The Pictures had such a hard time getting signed. He said ask FMR or EMI. Good point.

The Pictures album title Pieces of Eight is a reference to the infamous British comedy series Little Britain. Davey admits to being the fan;

”I am. I'm quite obsessed. I'd put it up there with Fawlty Towers, Alan Partridge and The Office. I love [my] English comedy shows.”

One picture can tell a thousand words, but The Pictures don’t have any words to speak. Just music. They're just here to play some good old’ rock tunes.
