Snowman

“We are Snowman. We are a musical gang from Slumber town, Australia. We are strange, beautiful, ugly, jagged, swampy, hypnotic, abstract, ambient, loud, quiet, miserable and manic. We are the sound of your imagination turned up to eleven.”

That is how the four members of Snowman describe themselves within their biography... and I agree!

With Joe McKee from England; Andy Citawarman from Indonesia; Olga Hermanniusson from Iceland; and Ross DiBlasio from Australia - Snowman could be a true representation of the cosmopolitan makeup that is Australia – a complex and interesting thing with scope and mixtures of cultures.

Their newest creation, a self-titled Album released in September 2006, follows up the release of their debut EP, 'Zombies on the Airwaves of Paris', produced by Steve Bond and released in 2004.

“Steve Bond produced our EP. Dave Parkin produced our (new) album. They work in different ways. We recorded the EP at Steve's house. Whereas the album was recorded in Dave's studio, blackbird,” he said.

“We recorded the album live initially, then added layers sounds and chaos. The approach to the EP was a bit more clinical...we played everything separately...The work we did with Dave captures four people playing in a room together. There is more soul in the recording.

The band choose to release their new album with the smaller Victorian label Dot Dash after independently releasing the EP with distribution by Shock Records.

“They are our favourite label. They put out records that we like and there is no bullshit about them. They are straight shootin'. Dot Dash consists of four or five people and they get more done than all the major labels put together.”

Touring has been frantic with shows with Temper Trap, another round of Big Day's Out over as well as the Laneway Festival – some insight into what's planned next for Snowman - 'a break or world domination or bust' is the question!

“We are on a month break from touring as we speak. But we are using this time to focus our energy on the next record. We are writing solidly and we are very happy about the sounds we are creating at the moment.”

In early 2007 Snowmen tied with Eskimo Joe for 7 WAMi (Western Australian Music Industry award) nods. I ask if that proves that you truly are the best thing out of WA in the last ten years?

“Yeah probably....didn't they sell a million records? Ha,” he said.

In the end, the group walked away with three awards in hand - Best Rock Act, Best Video clip for You are a Casino and Most Popular Album.
