On Wednesday night, TheGetaway Plan played The Cambridge Hotel, Newcastle. One of my favourite haunts, The Cambridge is quite a cool venue that is comfy, welcoming and pulls in the best acts in town, such as British India and Birds of Tokyo in the coming months.
On this particular night, the first support act was Closure in Moscow who sashayed onstage with vocalist Chris De Cinque. Clearly enjoying his role as the frontman, he swayed and sang his little heart out on We Want Guarantees Not Hunger Pains and Breathing Underwater.
Before too long, New Zealand outfit Goodnight Nurse made their appearance and the foursome let out a bevy of songs from their Keep Me On Your Side album such as My Only, Milkshake, Death Goes To Disco, The Night and I Need This. Joe Little’s vocals were strengthened via backing vocals from the band that worked well in unison.
As the set finished, the stage was set for the main act The Getaway Plan, who were conducting the Where the city meets the sea tour. Touring from June to August Australia wide, the boys have played with the former for most of the tour and this combination has worked well.
The band formed in Melbourne 2003 and has done well with their single Where the City Meets the Sea debuting at #28 on The Aria charts. There has been an appearance on Rove and lots of airplay on Triple J, Nova and Channel [V]. The album Other Voices, Other Rooms debuted #14 on The Arias and is sitting comfortably on the charts. In essence the band is doing great and this was typified by the audiences’ response for If Suspense Doesn’t Kill Us, Something Else Will. Other beauties such as Shadows and Sleep Spindles were well received, illustrating the band is building on their fan base.
Vocalist Matthew Wright was in his element playing to the audience as he elevated his vocal range and launched himself into the songs. Dave Anderson and Clint Splattering provided good background vocals in between smoky riffs and bass beats, as drummer Aaron Barnett let out his aggression on the drums. With that said, there is good reason for the attention the band has been receiving.
