On a dreary Sunday afternoon best suited for a hot chocolate and DVD at home, a number of eager beavers made their way to The Annandale. For $5, punters were treated to a host of local artists.
Being fashionably late I made it in time for New Zealand outfit Goldenhorse, who according to their website “are possibly the biggest band in New Zealand right now”. The five piece Auckland band threw themselves into their set as vocalist Kirsten Morrell’s crisp vocals resonated on Run, Run, Run, Wake Up Brother and Wandering One.
As the crowd attendance increased, so too did the liveliness but by this stage my stomach grumbled and I was in dire need of a feed. An hour later and 2kgs heavier I was back inside The Annandale watching Pinky Beecroft converse with the audience as he cracked jokes and mimicked a tipsy lout. His mannerisms were worth the visit as he shot glances, paced the stage and generally did not give a “cahoots” what others thought.
Beecroft, the former singer of Machine Gun Fellatio gave a sound performance of Fabulous Driver, as The White Russians strummed away. At one point Beecroft chided the drummer Christian McBride for stuffing up a song, adding to the humour that was at the centre of their act. Despite the disheveled set and strange antics, the naughty quartet was a joy to watch.
