The Coven
Exhumed
Coven its reputation (and many photographs of past Coven's) proceeds it . Although, everything I have heard was very kind and appealing to say the least.
Usually when I review I go as Writer Belle, usual street gear no putting myself out there or getting involved in themes or the like. But something within the concept of Coven and its lifestyle is perhaps more me than I would regularly admit. Sitting listening to the music from midnight onwards, I do have many tracks of the Coven-style within my own musical library a lot more than perhaps other styles of music I own.
Dress theme listed as 'dark/alternative/goth/in theme (being 'Exhumation' interpretations open to the individual from my visual experience of it all), I purchased a black corset top, slashed through the middle with a blood red bow and put together my most Gothic attire ready to be a part of a scene I had heard so many lovely interesting things about.
Making its debut at Halo, Coven sat nicely within the venue. The candles, smoke and dark corners suited the Coven experience. I can't really comment on previous venues only seeing photos that gave the camera persons view of the event. Most venues have definite pros and cons so far all my Halo experiences have been amazingly good regardless of the genre of music.
If I was to compare the different nightclub scenes I have been a part of recently Goth, Hip Hop and Dance... I would have to say that although Goth gives the impression to the outsider of being the most out there, it is perhaps one of the more respectful and gentle nightclub environments to be a part of.
Boundaries are definitely set and no lines were crossed for me that evening and early morning unlike previous experiences where venues often attract younger, more substance impaired crowds who don't understand that perhaps you are dressed to impress yourself.
I will admit being my first Coven I had no idea of dance styles and spent the majority of it socializing there is something about the dance style that requires a certain type of movement that being a Dance nightclub girl from way back in her trainers and comfy clothes, I couldn't translate to big heels and bound into a corset which required me to breathe in as I got dressed.
I remember saying to a friend in the early hours of the morning - I don't know anyone else but you and... and he made the comment of we are all friends - and it is true.
For those that didn't make, Spreckenstein's set went as follows:
1. iNsuRge - Speculator (3:02)
2. VAST - Here (4:56)
3. The Birthday Massacre - Lovers End (4:14)
4. The Faint - Symptom Finger (3:27)
5. The Cure - Wrong Number (6:01)
6. Curve - Chinese Burn (4:51)
7. Razed in Black - There Goes My Head (5:40)
8. Flesh Field - Beneath Contempt (3:35)
9. Hanzel Und Gretyl - Stern Krieg (3:41)
10. Psyclon Nine - better than suicide (5:10)
11. Combichrist - Give Head If You Got It (4:43)
12. Assemblage 23 - Binary (5:42)
13. VNV Nation - Nemesis (4:30)
14. Zombie Girl - Creepy Crawler (3:54)
Wrap yourself up in your Gothic best and prepare to be encased in one of the most sensual scenes in Hobart. It was certainly an experience not to miss. I will be seeking out beautiful attire for the next Coven, a girl needs more than one corset in her wardrobe...
