It was a first experience – the Obese Records Block Party. Even hearing about 'Dave Chapelle's Block Party' still gave me no insight about what to expect. Perhaps I should go and compare and contrast both the gig and the movie, but I have deadlines and not enough time to watch a DVD before I write!
So obliviously I made my way to the Uni Bar, expecting the unexpected and interested to see what the crowd was like given that I had never been to a live Gig of Obese Record's genres.
I would have the say the crowd was masculine heavy – which being a small girl on the job at times felt a little daunting. There is something strange about remaining sober in a room full of people who aren't and I had to remain focused to take all the guys on stage in and not get interrupted during the night.
I was presented with a 'Crew Pass' that gave me access to all areas if necessary but really I needed to stay out the front for this gig. There were ample positions to see things on the Uni Bar stage and there was no concern about missing out on anything visually by remaining out the front. So I had no reason to go back there...
Hobart was its second stop, and featured Pegz with Bonez and Patto (Vic), Muph & Plutonic (Vic), Funkoars (SA) with support from Heads of State, Grotesque, Patto, Mdusu, Oratoric and Paddles – with Victoria first and then following Tasmania, it makes its way to South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland.
The line up was big... the gig was super polished and professionally run. Security staff were good, the bar staff were onto the many Block Party people needing drinks.
There is something about this gig that if you go out of the room for even a brief moment you totally lose your place in the set. Which for me, going home to put more warmer clothes on and grab a piece of toast at a little before 10pm (during the many sets that DJ Grotesque) had, really confused me for a moment. Luckily the sound and lighting guys were helpful and pointed out where it was up to on the set list.
I don't know if a Block Party is my scene. I certainly like some of the signed artists on Obese Records and it was well run, well organised and certainly popular with the guys and girls there – they looked like they were having fun and as a reviewer I can be certain in saying that the Obese Block Party was a hit in Hobart.
