The Boys Are Back in Brown tour featuring the infamous Frenzal Rhomb and Nancy Vandal had all the old-school punk rock fans coming out of the woodwork to get some serious jumping around done to their old favourites. And jump they did, for these renowned masters of punk were in no mood to disappoint their loyal fans who were here to boost up their stocks during this, our time of recession. Opening the show was Nancy Vandal who have not performed live in over five years, but one would not accuse them of getting rusty. Their songs were performed with high spirits, as well as the assorted alcoholic kind, and neither left me wanting. The energy of the band reined true their recent claims of being ‘quite partial to rock’, as demonstrated by use of their dynamic collaboration of brass, drums and Fox Trotsky’s shiny silver guitar. Audience participation was a big plus to this concert and enthusiasm was kept peaking with clever introductions to old favourites and the interesting addition of a ‘wheel of rock’ which, when spun, would land on a random number to conclude how many power riffs would be played at the end of each song. Following NV and many a patient chant of the crowd (“FREEEEENZAL…FREEEEEENZAAAAAALLL”) Lead singer Jason Walley finally graced the stage, those hefty dreads and the usual fantastic band of merry followers. Again the old favourites were always destined to get the crowd going, with the band almost entirely drowned out by the yelling accompaniment of the audience; a circumstance which became method during Never Had So Much Fun during which the band left it up to the sea of punks to complete his verses. When not mid-song, Jason used his far mellower speaking voice to encourage people to purchase some Frenzal T-shirts and other paraphernalia. That’s our punk rock masters, always doing their bit for the economy. In truth it was my expectation that Frenzal would be the highlight of the concert by far. However, though both band’s performances evoked good fun and crazy antics, Nancy Vandal seemed decidedly more equipped to deal with a live audience. But this may be a direct result of the fact that Frenzal, even after being banned from triple J for all these years, are still loved quite enough, and simply do not need to be more equipped than they are. They have everything they need to keep the audience on their toes. All in all, a great night spent in the valley jumping amidst a sea of punk fans. Cheers fellas!
