There are concerts that brutally highlight the generation gap between myself and the upcoming music fans of tomorrow. Saturday night at the Hi-Fi Bar was a bitter reminder that though not yet gray, I may be getting to the age where I am described as the musical elderly. I arrived to
experience Amy Meredith, my thermals hugging my thighs and all visible skin wisely covered by a thick layer of wool. On my arrival, I was promptly confronted with Amy Meredith fans who were only partially dressed, and, despite the Baltic temperatures of the outside world, seemed to be unaffected by the seasonal change.
Amy Meredith are what you would call a candy cane band, sickeningly sweet and pretty to look at. Their set, performed in the prom themed Hi-Fi Bar, was hard to fault, the lead singer punched the air in perfect time to dramatise drum beats like a choreographed Dancing with the Stars performance.
The five piece Sydney band is made up of lead singer Christian Lo Russo, Joel Chapman and Cameron Laing on guitars, Wade Osborn on bass guitar and Kosta Theodosis on drums, put on a performance to impress, playing songs nonstop to their over enthusiastic audience. The lead singer performed theatrics, jumping from the top of the drums to the side of the stage as he serenaded the love struck crowd. As the songs rolled on, the crowd went wild dancing like maniacs. As the crowd danced, the band responded, becoming even more larger than life. Lo Russo seemed to recognise his power, conducting the audience to jump and clap at his command.
The band stop mid set to announce that they would be crowning a prom queen and dragged two girls on stage from the crowd who their sang "Kiss Me Quick" to as the girls held each other and sang along. Amy Meredith played all the crowd pleasers, like "Lying" and "Young Heart".
Amy Meredith will be touring Australia in May and June to promote their new album Restless. You can catch them next in Newcastle on the 26th May 2011 at the Newcastle Leagues Club. For fans of Amy Meredith, this show will not be a let down.
