Dear Jon, Mince & Barry, otherwise known as The Fratellis,

You know I love you, right? So why would you do this to me? I have been a loyal fan since Costello Music first poked it’s delightfully Glaswegian-Arctic- Monkeys head over the musical horizon and said “Hello, Lisa. Listen to me, I’m great”.

So why would you omit my all-time favourite Fratellis song from the setlist? Not only my favourite, but the song that initiated my Fratellis fandom as we know it. I waited the whole set for that song (not that I didn’t enjoy the rest, but we’ll get to that after this short but necessary grievance) I kept thinking, ‘they’ll probably encore with it’ and ‘it must be coming up next, oh, it must’ . I even stood, ever patient, ever hopeful, through the tedious support band. But lo, did the houselights come up and blow Lisa’s hopes right outta the Hi-Fi. Isn’t that possibly one of your biggest songs? It’d be like Led Zeppelin not playing Battle of Evermore; sure, it’s not the track they may be synonymous with, but it’s a hit, damnit. You are neither successful enough nor in Australia often enough to get away with that, Fratellis.

Yours sincerely,

Enjoyed The Show Very Much Thank You But Is Still Pissed Off A Bit.

With that sore gripe out of the way, I can tell you, nay, assure you that the Fratellis put one hell of a damn show. Opening with current single Mistress Mable, the crowd immediately heaved into a quasi-mosh (a sold out show does not allow for much dancing space, especially in the Hi Fi) and knew in their heart of rock’n’roll hearts that this was gonna be a dazzling display.

Frontman/guitarist Jon commended our knowledge of the latest album’s tracks, and everyone giggled sheepishly inside. Aw, shucks. Dipping into Costello Music’s more standout tracks (Flathead, Chelsea Dagger, Henrietta) had the happily compacted crowd a-singin’ and a-dancin’ along, despite the sometimes intolerable heat of the Hi Fi. For a band with such grand hype and promise on their shoulders, I was glad to see their songs stood up live. All in all, the show was a eight: minus one for point for lack of muso-audience interaction (it ends up being, song-song-song-HELLO MELBOURNE THANKS FOR COMING- song –song- song etc) and one rather hefty point deducted for omitting the aforementioned favourite track. But I promise, boys, if you ever come back again, I won’t hold it against you.
