Gyroscope. What comes to mind when you hear this word? A device consisting of a spinning mass, typically a disk or wheel, mounted on a base so that its axis can turn freely in one or more directions and thereby maintain its orientation regardless of any movement of the base?
I didn’t think so! How about the hardest working punk rock outfit in the country? Four energetic kids from Perth who know how to write a catchy hook and maintain an incredibly loud sound, at the same time as swinging their guitars around their necks, only to strike the next chord? That sounds a lot more like it!
Who better to warm the crowd up than 3 of the countries greatest punk seedlings, The Tall Poppies, Mere Theory and Behind Crimson Eyes, all of whom helped to ignite the pilot light for what was sure to be one of the most fiery, sweaty, dramatic rock and roll shows.
Hot off the release of their new album Are You Involved?, recorded in the US with super producer, Mark Trombino (Jimmy Eat World, Jebediah, The Living End), from the second the critters set foot on stage, it’s clear to see that the professionalism of the whole thing has rubbed off on them.
Belting through classics such as Doctor, Doctor, Confidence in Confidentiality and Take This For Granted, the Corner Hotel is jumping with excitement, just trying to keep up with the energy exerted from a band that have toured their asses of in the past 8 years, developing a fan base any international band would be proud to have.
Gyroscope are a white-hot-ball of rock and roll for the hour long set, and never drop a beat. For a punk band, it is incredible how difficult it is to stop tapping ones foot. New tracks A Slow Dance and 22of3 sound like the band have been playing them forever, tight as a goldfish. It was evident people knew the old stuff better. “Woo! Midnight Express!” was the call from many-a-punter, but showstealers came from everywhere. 2004’s Sound Shattering Sound, Are You Involved?, and of course, the marriage proposal I don’t think anyone will ever forget.
It seemed one excited punter had decided that night was as good as any to propose to his girlfriend. “Will you make me the happiest man around?” he asked, and when she answered, rock and roll spirit close at heart, he dove into the crowed and surfed his way back onto the stage. It was really hard to decide exactly whose night this was. Those four crazy boys from Perth, launching one of the best new Aussie albums of the year, or Rock-man and his seemingly bewildered fiancée? To celebrate the occasion the Gyro’s rocked the house with crowd favorite, SafeForever, and boy, did it rock.
However, surprisingly, it was new single, Fast Girl that got the crowd the most out of the crowd, vocally and kinetically. After that show, I’m sure it’s not going to be long before everyone’s involved. Are You Involved?
The record is out now through FMR, and the boys are currently taking it around our beautiful land.
