Monday, July 10 2006 @ Revolver, Prahran

Jaed’s CD launch surpassed all expectations and gave everyone at this gig an unpretentious power punch right to the ear drums. Launching their first album named Dirty Days this three piece band fronted by Vanessa Eve; guitar and vocals, James Innes on the skins and Damien on Bass started their short but bloody sweet set around 7.30.

They played tight with mainly songs off the CD but with a few others thrown in to bulk up their song list. Jaed’s influences were distinctly apparent: The Pixies, Bikini Kill, Nirvana and Hole, all shone through, and it sounds cheesy: but with Spiderbait-ish catchiness.

The laid back crowd at Revolver on a Monday night lapped up Jaed’s enthusiasm and responded with feverishly groovy foot tapping and head nodding. The sound was mixed well with each instrument jamming well together. Clearly from the influences, Vanessa played her gaffer taped Telecaster mostly distorted with a short burst of complementary clean verse (very Courtney Love). While Damien’s six string bass was effective at adding another dimension to the sound.

Vanessa introduced each of the songs with an anecdote about it’s meaning or origin which engaged the audience. However in most cases she failed to mention the title of the track which was frustrating for a certain reviewer.

The night was topped off with front-woman Vanessa doing a solo tune followed by a screening of their first film clip of their song “Gutter Girl,” which proved that their energy and gusto was retained on the recording.
In the short half an hour in that Jaed played it was hard to not get keyed up about where these guys are headed in the not so distant future. The audience left with Jaed’s catchy riffs incarcerated in their minds: humming them the whole tram ride home.
