Kate Miller-Heidke is an anomaly among the Australian music scene, there isn’t really anybody else out there doing what she’s doing, it’s like a mix of pure pop, cabaret and novelty rock. For the most part it works really well, she’s got a quite a sardonic sense of humour to her songs and she can sing beautifully, but when she goes on those into those histrionics it just completely ruins the song and the atmosphere of the gig.
I found myself on a number of occasions covering my ears because I could strand the piecing noise of her voice, at times I was thinking can you just sing the song and stop showing off, it reminded me of those of those R n' B diva’s who do those vocal acrobatics just to show off.
Some of the positive aspects of the gig were here backing band were fantastic, really tight with a great sense of rhythm. I hate to say it but some of the most enjoyable parts of the concert were when Kate was off the stage and the band was jamming.
The first time I saw Kate Miller-Heidke was on Rockwiz last year, I thought her performance there was over the top, mind you the choice of song was 'Careless Whisper' and it really was like polishing a turd.
The audience Kate Miller-Heidke attracts is very much couples, I didn’t really see any guys there with their mates, they were probably dragged by their girlfriends, but in saying that the people who were there really did seem to enjoy themselves.
All of this is my personal opinion, so I hope I don’t get any hate mail from the Kate Miller-Heidke devotees. I will end on this note, what she does, she does well, and it just didn’t appeal to me.
