I love Louis XIV! If they hadn’t opened the show tonight, it would have been an expensive exercise in disappointment.
The Killers were playing their 175th show on the Sam’s Town tour tonight, and it was really obvious. While they were musically solid and had all the bell, whistles, flashing lights, falling foil there was a distinct feeling that the crowd was faceless.
Having said that, every song that you would want The Killers to play was heard – 'Mr Brightside', 'Somebody Told Me', 'Smile Like You Mean It'. There were also a few highlights, particularly the cover of 'You’re Just Too Good To Be True'.
The set started strongly with 'When You Were Young' and grainy shots being projected onto a piece of muslin in front of the stage. The stage set up was first class. It’s been a while since I’ve seen more than a curtain with a poster behind a band. But I just didn’t feel it!
The Howling Bells set wasn’t crash hot either. In fact I wasn’t really sure why these guys were picked as the middle support, unless it was just to make The Killers look good. That was probably a bit harsh, the Howling Bells are great musicians; just not my idea of a great band.
Thank God for Louis XIV! Their all black costumes (complete with waistcoasts), on stage smoking and swilling straight from red wine bottles was partnered with straight up rock and roll. I only knew a couple of their songs before the show, and I’m going to buy the album. Yep, that’s how good it was!
