I arrived at the Corner Hotel rather late but the place was already spewing at the seams, Mudhoney only tour here every few years and when they do all there fans come out of the closet, the last time they were here was about 5 years ago to promote the album The Lucky Ones. This tour was a sideshow for the Meredith festival; in tow were Precious Jules, Kim Salmon’s new outfit.

Kim has had a heavy influence on Mudhoney there influence can be traced back to Kim Salmon’s early band the Scientists, with Precious Jules he has come full circle and reverted back to the proto punk of his earlier band., simple 3 chord cord rock and roll, they thrashed though a songs from their self titled album interspersed with a couple of classic covers Chinese Rocks by the Heartbreakers and Baby’s on Fire by Brian Eno.

As soon as Mudhoney hit the stage there was no they were in 5th gear and smashed out Poisoned Water from Tomorrow Hits Today, Mudhoney have been kicking it for 23 years now and they show no sign of slowing down, relentless in their rock and roll attitude and their live shows leaves most contemporary bands in their wake. Mark Arm cavorts around the stage like a desert lizard he spits and the songs out with pure venom. The crowd are lucky enough to get a set that consisted of their whole career they play early songs such as When Tomorrow Hits, from the self titled Mudhoney album. The crowd was a mix of old devoted fans with their faded t-shirts and 20 year growth from 1994 to the smaller punks who probably stole the albums from their parents.

When they burst into Touch Me I’m Sick the crowd went bezerk and mosh pit went into overdrive. The crowd was relentless throughout and smashed each other into tiny pieces, there appreciation was felt with the band and they played a 2 hour set, the encore consisted of an awesome version of Suck It Dry which brought the crowd to their knees it totally pulverised the crowd and left them aching for more, lucky for me I got to see them again on the Saturday at Meredith, with an added bonus of Keith Morris doing guest vocals on the Black Flag classic Fix Me.

This gig will be spoken about with fervour and be remembered for a long time, Mudhoney don’t get older they just go harder. Gig of the year. Enough said.
