As the first tour to celebrate the release of Pete’s new album See the Sun we were all expecting greatness. Debuting on the charts this week at #1 you can understand why the venue was sold out. We were all here to see the masters work, and as usual with this band they didn’t disappoint.
Taking to the stage with gusto was the support Carus. He really gets into his songs, and makes it hard for us not to do the same. Australian Reggae had everyone dancing along; the sounds that came out of this man’s mouth were astonishing. Big Brother made us all think about what has become of the television industry. It’s an important issue to raise. We were very impressed by hearing something so different.
After being pumped up immensely by the support, all hell broke loose when Pete and the Stonemasons took to the stage. I must say that the lighting behind the band (in the shape of a rising sun) looked beautiful. Opening with Freedom, the band spent the whole night rocking out and showcasing a great many songs of the new album, but also some oldies from Feeler and The Game.
New band member Jonathan fitted in really nicely, and I must give props to the other Stonemasons - Ben, Pedro and Andy, those guys know how to put on a show. Smile was an awesome track, capturing the laid back style Pete is well known for. On this tour the band have brought along a string and brass section, as seen on standout number George’s Helper. Fly with you has changed somewhat since first debuting on The Game, the newer version being rockier and it works live however I prefer the original.
The highlight of the night for me was the stripped back Lost my Soul. This song is so simple and yet so powerful. At one stage a fan pushed her way to the front and held up a sign saying ‘10ft Tall’, she spent the whole song trying to get Pete’s attention, but little did she know he was already going to play that song next. And what a song it is - dedicated to a lost friend, a story about a butterfly, when you hear the full story live you will never forget it.
Closing the show with fan fave So Beautiful, the applause went on forever. This is one of those songs you don’t sing – you say it as you think of all the pretentious people you have met, it’s dedicated to them.
Pete and the Stonemasons have grown every time I have heard them live, and I wouldn’t wish the success they have received on anyone else. Such nice people, such an awesome band. Look out for rocking new single Class A soon.
