So there are two types of people in the world today. Those who have seen The Shambles in action-whether it be on their Channel 31 TV show or their successful Comedy Festival runs- and those who haven’t. Yeah, alright, there’s probably more than that in the big wide world but tonight at the Portland Hotel in Melbourne, there is us and them. And not in a 'vs.' kind of manner, more of a “glad to see you’ve joined the fold” kind of way...but not like a cult...anyway.
For those who are familiar with The Shambles, you’ll be happy to see many of their much-loved TV and radio characters that, somehow, are still funny after the three or four odd years of seeing them. I guess, because, as the comedians grow, as do the characters. Wanky Uncle has gotten quiet thin and Ian Melly has a different fur coat and sings with a fish. Skyline Man is still at his arrogant best, and the Interpretive Dancer has a whole new routine he wants to show you...in great, graphic detail.
There are also a few new additions, surprises for those who haven’t seen the show that you’ll no doubt adore. There are a number of substantial changes in this year’s show, though. There is a dash more nudity (for better or worse, depending on your side of the coin), more one-liners and more banter and camaraderie between the boys. There is a little less audience participation than the past years, which I found relieving since most ended up being with giggly-to-the-point-of-mania tweenage girls (or, in the case of last night’s show, an overly-friendly gent who, purposely or not, seemed to demand the stage more than the comedians)
There are enough cultural references to keep the audience melded together like a big laughing blobfish (especially the opening...I’m telling you, seen to be believed) and the ever-present bloopers and improv that keeps the show fresh and tasty, like a fresh and tasty bun from Baker's Delight. With cinnamon. Mmmm.
The Shambles may not have the household name status of your Arj Barkers or your Greg Fleets but they certainly deserve it. Every bit dedicated to putting on the best show one’s money can buy (especially considering the door price was surprisingly cheap- I do so love a bargain), filling the show with song, dance, witty repartee, sketches and free Bertie Beetles. Don’t bother selling your left knee for Janeane Garofalo tickets, and put off seeing Adam Hills for the next night because The Shambles' is one of the best shows in this year’s ripper Comedy Festival line-up. As if I would lie to you.
