What a welcome back to Melbourne for Brisbane band Yves Klein Blue on Friday night. The lads sold out show at the Corner Hotel was filled with young fillies and stallions eager to see their return.
And a word on the fillies - I’m over your lady ankle boots.
I’m taking this little bit of space to respond to the overwhelming ‘Lemmings’ trend of lady ankle boots last Friday night. My eyes bled.
We’re not in the 1940s, you’re not milking cows in the Depression, and it makes your legs look stubby.
Forgive me, but it needed to be said. Sneakers rule, okay?
Now, onto the music!
Yves Klein Blue were supported by two choice-cuts including fellow-Brisbane band The Last Dinosaurs, and Sydney band Cloud Control.
Last Dinosaurs put in a solid effort – good tunes to get everyone started. Kind of like Supergrass flavored bubble-gum pop. Cute, sharp and catchy. They’ve just released a new EP Back From the Dead and it’s definitely worth a look-in.
Cloud Control were up next. The crowd seemed to get off on their tunes – but they band seemed a little off at times, and I could barely hear the lead vocals of Al Wright over Heidi Lenffer’s whispery (but loud?) back-up vocals. It was confusing!
Perhaps the mix was off – not sure. They certainly brought lots of energy, but Al looked a tad uncomfortable at times, whilst bassist Jeremy K bounded about stage.
And, the tunes themselves weren’t all together tight. That said, drummer Ulrich Lenffer was a power-packet of thump with his unstoppable beats and dancing.
The band of the evening leaped onto the stage and straight into song. With a little video display behind them, they truly gave the crowd their all – and seemed at times, overwhelmed by the massive response they received.
A powerpack of tunes, the YKB set kind of melded into one giant thunder sound of punk rock and roll. Standouts included ‘Make Up Your Mind’ and ‘Getting Wise’.
The drumming however was off. The snare sounded really flat guys! Sorry – but it is true. Perhaps the hazard of this great big tour they’ve been on.
Perhaps everyone was suffering a case of bad luck that night, eh? That said, the drumming didn’t put off the rest of YKB. The guitar sound was sharp and rich.
At times the band sounded like cockney British punk rockers – other times the lead singer sounded (and looked) like Mr Julian Casablancas from The Strokes.
I do know there were a couple of new songs included – which were great surprises.
A welcome return for this Brisbane band who have been churning up radios as of late, and have certainly generated a huge following in VIC Land.
