Saturday, September 1 2007 @ Rosemount Hotel, The, North Perth

I was literally giggling with glee upon advice from Jade that I had scored a live review berth. My first live review no less - wow! Having no prior knowledge of The Exploders I made a beeline to my local music store without delay to get a copy of their latest and second album ‘Easy and the Sun’ in my hot little hand!

It is important that the reading audience be aware that Rock ‘n’ Roll runs through my veins like mud runs through the Mississippi (river that is)! I could barely contain my excitement upon listening to their album. My enthusiasm for my assignment was greatly heightened and as a tip for the rock ‘n’ roll lovers amongst you if you haven’t already, go and out and get a copy of this album it’s awesome!

For those of you who don’t know, The Exploders are a duo made up of high school friends TJ Allender (vocals/guitar) and Paul Doery (bass) hailing from Lake Bolac in Victoria. The pair are joined on their current tour by two added musicians a drummer and a guitarist/keyboardist both with the fine heritage of having played with local band Sleepy Jackson and whom deserve a mention for their admirable musicianship.

Perth was once considered too far for many touring bands but over the last couple of years it has been quite the opposite with the many music lovers here literally spoilt for choice! The Rosemount Hotel in North Perth is one of the few original live music venues in existence and has recently seen a revamp following a change of ownership.

Arriving (decidedly early in fear of missing anything) the Rosemount’s lighting and fire set a mood that was warm and inviting, the room with centred bar perfect is perfect for live acts. The night kicked off with two stalwarts of the Perth music scene ‘Sex Panther’ and ‘Red Jezebel’ who I must admit didn’t really hold much interest for me but in fairness provided a good warm up to the main event.

By the time The Exploders took to the stage the room had filled up considerably (I was worried there for a while) but the turn out I would still consider disappointing. Not to mention a real loss to the many that missed out on a sensational gig! As a front man TJ has one hell of a stage presence and vocals to match. Fill in bassist Jay with his Slash vibe going on also added to the look of what I would call a real rock ‘n’ roll outfit. These guys channel some of the class rock ‘n’ roll acts of a bygone era. The night proved to be a showcase for ‘Easy and the Sun’ but not recognising all of the songs I can only presume there were songs included from their first album. Stand out’s were the wah-wah infused ‘Cola’ and album title track ‘Easy and the Sun’.

In closing The Exploders are totally comfortable in their chameleon skins effortlessly delivering their wares regardless of style. Their allegiance to the art of classy and elusive guitar driven rock is endearing. I as well as the others that shared the experience and dance floor had a great night with an act that makes me weak with excitement.

What fine ambassadors for the resurgence of rock their album is great but live they are on fire!
