When we arrived there was a HUGE line up and seemed as though Dub Trio would started playing to no one, you couldn’t see many t-shirt with Fantomas, Mr Bungle, Faith No More, or Tomahawk which I thought there’d be plenty. But I suppose this new project of Patton's is very different from previous acts, I think this guy just pushes every genre to that limit where you love it!! I have never been a fan to the sort of music that peeping tom encases, but Patton just makes it sound bloody brilliant.
Dub Trio was playing when we arrived, not really my type of music... it was very well done though , you could see the odd dub trio fan going off in the own little world, air guitaring, and just jiving away in their own space, reminded me a lot of Pink Floyd instrumentals, triple j (left on after the party’s finished your trying to sober up and not puke, so you just lie there and focus on the music), and the type of techno music you can sort of handle. Actually watching this type of stuff live you could see the amount of work that goes into their music, its non stop, and very techno with the peaking of a song then not going anywhere, (well that’s my interpretation of techno!). And of course there was no singing. Which I didn’t know until that night, I had never heard dub trio before this event, I had heard of them but not heard them. I guess all of their songs have no singing. Biggest thing I can say about this band is that they are good at what they do, very good!
After a short intermission Dub Trio came back on stage and Imani Copplea with a keyboardist wearing a HUGE clown’s mask! We were well positioned, front of stage but too far back!! I had to keep looking through people’s heads which was annoying but as Mr Mike Patton took the stage and they started the music it was ok. They ripped straight into it with 'Five Seconds', music was sounded unreal, Mike was looking better than ever in a white suit and stocking for a hat!
‘Mojo’ was up next throwing the crowd into frenzy as we all knew the song, singing along and jumping up and down! ‘Don’t Even Trip’ was next up and Mike got the crowd to get right into the “OOOO” part of the song, which was great as it’s quite a slow song. Mike then introduced us all to Butterscotch his new beat boxer, and she ripped up the stage for a good 10 minutes with some beat boxing like I’d never heard before, such a small chick too!
When Mike returned he had changed his outfit... true Pop Star Style! I’ve read articles and interviews where he has stated, “Peeping Tom is my version of Pop Music”
Mike then talked to the crowd for a bit... asking us if we could go on a holiday where would it be. Some idiot yelled out “Freo!!” and Mike yelled back “you’re here ya homie!!” He then told us “Indonesia!! Hell you guys in Perth are closer to there than Sydney!! Which is great! And im going to take youz their right now with Miss Imani Cooplea”, who then started with the song ‘Getaway’, next was ‘Caipirinha’, a personal favourite of mine!
‘Kill the Dj’ was up next then mike left the DJ to spin the records, so I head out for a ciggy. When I headed back in it was impossible to get back in the same good position as before so me and a mate head up stairs for (hopefully) a better view… I think the next two songs were ‘Your Neighborhood Spaceman’ and ‘How u Feelin’, but cant be quite sure about that... next up was definetly ‘Were not alone’, another favourite of mine!!
Then Mike gets the crowd to laugh as hard and as loud as they can!! Funny stuff!! ‘Sucker’ was the final song and Imani took center stage she was full on, light on her I was at top level she was very good at it!!
Encore.. We all roared into a frenzy to get Mike and them all back onstage for another song that I can’t remember the name of!! ‘Celebrity Death Match’ might have been it, all in all it was a SPECTALUAR performance, one I wont forget, cant help feeling though I truly missed out when Tomahawk came to town, I imagine that show would be the only thing to top this one …
