After a long break The Gurge are finally touring again and it all kicked off at the Leopold with a show I was really looking forward to.

The night opened with the band Dirty Secrets. At first most people just stood around nodding their heads until two brave souls, who had obviously downed a bit more liquid confidence than the rest of us, jumped onto the floor in front of the stage and started dancing around. This seemed to encourage people to come in closer to the stage and they had most of the crowd moving by the end of their set.

Next up were local favourites Snowman. You could tell a lot of people where really looking forward to seeing these guys and the numbers swelled around the stage when the band came on for a sound check.
They performed a brilliant set that proved that the Perth music scene is not just alive and well but creating quality acts. By the end of the set they had managed to create a great vibe in the venue and helped set the atmosphere for the rest of the night.

If they can keep putting out quality music and following it up with great performances such as the one tonight I would imagine it won’t be long until we see Snowman headlining their own national tour.

After a short wait it was now time for the band most people had come to see. The crowd erupted as they caught their first glimpse of the Gurge making their way on stage and the crowd surged forward. Security tried in vane to keep an imaginary barricade between themselves and the stage but when the Gurge started their first song, F.S.O, security had to retreat to the sides of the stage as they where overrun.

By the second song, I Will Lick Your Arsehole, the band where in full swing and interacting with the crowd with front man Quan Yeomans handing the mike over to screaming fans to sing the chorus and bassist Ben Ely swung his around to see just how many creative swear words the crowd come up with.

Even though Quan believes that “flowing smoothly and Regurgitator doesn’t really happen in nature”, that is exactly what happened tonight with the band flowing between their trademark styles of pop, punk, hip-hop and electronica. The crowd seemed overjoyed with the well selected set list with not one song loosing the crowd’s interest.

Although you could tell that the band was out of practice with a few wrong notes and missed beats here and there which would not have stood out as much if Quan did not look so puzzled each time it happened.
They finished up their set with The Drop which sent the crowd into frenzy and before the band had even made it off the stage the crowd erupted into calls for an encore performance.

The band couldn’t ignore the crowds pleas for long and pretty much came straight back on launching into the song I Was Sent By God To Get You Off.

This was followed by the song C’mon where Ben and Quan pulled fans out of the audience to dance on stage, although with security now gone a few more fans decided to make their way up as well but this didn’t seem to phase the band who where grinning from ear to ear as they jumped around passing the mike to fans to help shout C’mon!

The night finished with the always popular Kong Foo Sing which seemed to give the crowd one last surge of energy and got everyone jumping around again.

Overall tonight was probably one of the best gigs I have been to for a while. Great support acts and The Gurge did not disappoint, giving an energetic show and working the crowd creating a great atmosphere. If this was what the rest of the country has to look forward to then it is a gig that you don’t want to miss.
