Bright Yellow are three teenagers, Chris Surgey, lead guitar and vocals, Jeff Fheys, bass and Toby Ryan on drums. They come from the NSW Central Coast and are touring nationally to promote their new EP “Love’s no comfort.” They cruised into Coffs Harbour, post Christmas and entertained a small crowd at the Hoey Moey. Their first song 'Mr Officer' was a good opener with a fine bassline, neat drumming and a snappy ending that made me think this set will be tight. And it was and why shouldn’t it be, after all they have been playing together for three years.

The stand out track of the night was 'Good Question' which had the singer and songwriter Chris Surgey singing a high toned epic in a voice reminiscent of Robert Smith. From that moment on, Chris’ voice continued to charm in varying crescendos and laments. The playlist was largely different to the EP which would have been sure to please a few fans who wished to hear more from Bright Yellow.

The only negative of the night was that the band lacked engagement with the crowd who were largely ignored. So much so that at the end of the gig the band started packing up before the audience knew the gig was over! Never mind, this young band’s musical talent will carry them through while they fine tune building some charisma for the crowd.
