Whenever I see the name Dappled Cities Fly gracing a gig guide, I always tend to jump just a little, for seeing them play is always an exciting brag-worthy event. May it be due to spouts of wailing, occasional bird noises and humorous, caper-like antics, Dappled Cities Fly are one of my favourite acts…..ever.
As I waited anxiously for them to play, The Temper Trap were there to sway my interest, and oh how they did. Actually, they amazed me somewhat. There were many points during their performance that reminded me of Dappled Cities Fly immensely, but I found myself not caring, for it was good and fun and exciting. They played and made many dance and question why they were currently under the radar. I promised myself that I would make the effort to see them again.
The Crayon Fields followed and they pleased the senses and caused exciting sophisticated and emotional admiration, for their music really caused me to appreciate all things beautiful, due to the always emotional spurring qualities of the xylophone. I thought of kites on sunny days and boys with pretty faces, and children with ice cream all over their braces. It was pleasant and very enjoyable.
Dappled Cities Fly did not disrupt the delightful mood conjured up by their support, for they did not displease nor disappoint. Beginning the set with the much beloved 'Peach', there were many smiles which only occasionally broke to utter the words "…peach in the apple tree." The beautiful and smile-worthy sounds of 'Fire Fire Fire' followed, causing much merriment displayed through frolicking and other subtle dance orientated activities.
Dappled Cities Fly are the ultimate milkshake. There are many other flavours roaming around which are kinda tasty and fulfilling, but they are the only milkshake which has the perfect combination of ice cream and powdered bananas; thus allowing you to really enjoy the numerous artificial tastes entwined throughout. And they made it all happen so effortlessly.
As I stood there swaying from side to side and occasionally jumping with a constant foolish and idiotic smile upon my face, I was swooned by the music, for I wished the sounds of Dappled Cities Fly to be my courted gentleman; for he was delicate, intricate, exciting, at times ridiculously and hilariously interesting, all whilst being just a tad twisted.
As the set continued many songs to be on the new album followed, with 'Work It Out', the title track 'Granddance' and 'Within Hours', all making appearances. The much known 'Cream' was included; the set flowing perfectly, much like a turtle flowing through a clear bed of water.
'As I Lay Dying' was announced as the last song, a perfectly melodically involved ending; slow paced but most captivating. As I watched them leave the stage I felt swindled for I was alone once more due to the realisation that my courted gentleman was a figment of my imagination.
Luckily they returned for an encore of 'States', which was more than appropriate. The slightly quivering sound of some kind of organ, the lovely tap toeing beat of the drums, the shaky head quality of the bass and the yelping of Dave and Tim meant that the set ended more outstandingly than I could have imagined.
