Dresden Dolls describe themselves as “Punk Cabaret” so playing at a small burlesque club in Sydney’s Oxford Street, sounds kind of perfect doesn’t it? Well that’s where they played on Saturday night. This show wasn’t widely advertised as it was only a promo show for their new album “Yes Virginia” due to drop in Australia on April 15th.

Supporting the Dresden Dolls on this night was “DJ Jack Shit” a DJ that spins 78s and “Ménage a Tart”. Unfortunately due to a very slow Indian dinner I missed the support acts, however we arrived at 34B and started walking up a very old steep and tiny staircase which seemed to go on forever, then I heard the first tinkles of Amanda’s piano and we were in!

The band was consistent from beginning to end playing a mixture of songs from the new album and their previous album. Coin Operated Boy was received very well by the audience. I just have to mention how I love the part of this song where it sounds like a record skipping, I was wondering how this would be done live and it sounded flawless. After this track, Amanda Palmer (vocals, piano and toy piano) decided to walk through the audience to the bar to get herself a beer and get on the bar and do a few songs up there. She explained that this is one of the reasons she loves Australia because she can get up and sing on the bars (so rock!). They played for the first time and as she said possibly last time a cover of Jane Says by Janes Addiction, which was absolutely fantastic.

Then back to the stage and piano it was, I can’t remember the set list entirely but I do remember hearing “Missed Me” and from the new album “Backstabber” and “Mrs O” and I think they also played “Shores of California”. During “Girl Anachronism” Amanda had forgotten the words for the second verse and had to stop and ask the audience. She began the song again but still had a mental blank so stopped the song, it was a shame we didn’t get the whole song but it was hilarious to watch.

They came back and did a short encore and said they will be back in winter, I can definitely say I will be attending again and really urge people to go check them out live. They are both fantastic musicians and its refreshing to see something so original.
