Friday, January 11 2008 @ World Bar, The, Kings Cross

If you have to spend a Friday night in King's cross, you may as well spend it drinking out of the spout of a cocktail-filled teapot at the Worldbar listening to some of Australia's finest performing on the Mum stage. Getting there early is key to catching some great music and more importantly missing the ridiculously long queue to get inside.

First on the line up was the very unique Die Magic Band. With antics of a cowboy persona and telephone headset attached to a microphone, the band were sure to pull an inquisitive group onto the dance floor but keeping the gawking audience entertained would be harder. Like most there I was intrigued by the individuality of the twosome's performance but all too soon felt like I was trapped at some bad comedic standup act. The songs unfortunately felt soulless and empty without the kick of a drumbeat or some accompanying bass, but I felt the potential was there.

The Jezabels starting setting up as soon as the first act went off and soon had the room filled with their unique sound. The haunting voice of the female lead singer juxtaposes the accompanying background guitar giving the band a dreamy but dark and eerie sound. The audience's reaction was at first one of stunned astonishment and slight apprehension but the rows of staring audience members went completely unnoticed by the band who passionately completed their set, eventually winning over the hearts of many. By the last song the floor was filled with swaying bodies and the Jezabels had successfully and throughly warmed up the crowd for the last act of the night.

There was no doubt that the final band of the night had impressed Sydney a few times before and the floor filled up in anticipation. From the first cord stuck Intercooler impressed me with their tight set and catchy melodies. The boys from Brisbane may not have the most unique sound but they know how to get a crowd moving. I was glad to hear songs from their newly released album, Forever or Whatever and a couple of oldies. The boys freely advertised that we could meet them after the show when we all bought the new album and I'm sure many present did just that. The audience even requested more after an announcement that this would be their last song, which is always the best indication of a fantastic set.
