Michael Fitzgerald in action as taken by gigchick

The band about to perform has been building a crowd every single time they hit Sydney and tonight is the first of two nights here in this rocking venue… Please welcome to the stage… The Vasco Era.

Ok so I’m ahead of myself here. Before I launch into their performance review, I will let you know of two bands that warmed up the crowd. First up, Skybombers who put up an energetic performance to whatever numbered crowd is in front of them. Very rock and very Melbourne, so Melbourne that my friend turned to me and said they reminded her of British India. Nonetheless if you do catch these guys at a show let’s hope you have some energy to join in the hype.

The Fumes came up next and decided to smoke the place releasing the smoke machine adding to atmosphere of their blue grassy performance (but that was probably due to their guest harmonica player for a couple of songs). Although I wasn’t sure whether it was the lack of air that put me off but compared to the Skybombers their energy wasn’t as electrifying. The rest of the crowd loved it though! But before I let The Fumes sink in it was time… for when we all tried to party to forget about it (that thing we call weekdays…) and Vasco Era hit the stage.

The crowd had grown to become almost as energetic as the Vasco boys and at a few points the fans contain that fire and had made their way onstage – one punter even drumming the beat on the rotor toms with the band. Security definitely had their work cut out for them that night as they not only had to watch the crowd but the paparazzi frenzy on the side of the stage trying to capture all that energy going on. For an intimate venue, this is definitely a surprise to get some crowd surfing into the mix – and one to go down the history books. Other highlights include the massive sing-a-long to ‘When It Was Making Weird Love Songs’ (aka ‘Honey Bee’) and single released ‘When It First Showed Up’ before calling it a night, sending their fans home revitalised and happy with a taste of the band live once more. All ready to do it over again tomorrow night.
