Perspiration clings like mould on a bachelor’s refrigerator seals to my aching dishwashing arms as I swallow my vodka and join the chanting: TIM-MY, TIM-MY, TIM-MY, TIM-MY… and then the chant turns to a rousing roar as resplendent in personalized embroidered overalls and proudly flashing us his inked forearms and chest it’s, you guessed it, TIMMY TIME Damn Straight!
With You Am I’s first appearance on the coast ever (that I can recall), expectation of a show promoted by a radio station that never plays their music was a bit befuddling. We were a worried bunch of die hards. And oh no, the sound crew got it wrong. The guitar techs couldn’t please Tim and with a broken string within 1 minute of the opening song, the odds were stacking up against them, however Andy, Rusty and Davey knew what would happen. The big ‘T’ Man padded up to the new ball and with a glare in his fire red eyes, his body tightened and he stood tall with that Fuck The World stare and knowing that You Am I are better than the rest, he did what he does best – he played ROCK STAR.
I’ve seen many You Am I shows over the years and the one thing you never get comfortable with is the same stuff. Song after song varying in age and maturity from their cellar of fine delights is on the menu again tonight. After nearly 20 years in the biz, you have a wide selection to choose from. Would you like a fine classic 93’ Berlin Chair lightly arranged acoustically served up by Timothy himself? Or would you prefer the fully flavoured 95’ Wally Raffles or Moon Shines on Trubble? If your tastes are a bit more modern, perhaps you’d enjoy the youthful yet totally tasty Constance George followed by a large swig of Gunslingers from this year’s crop? But you want more don’t you?
The intoxication is making you feel a bit woozy but you have a taste for it. Take a taxi home tonight because you’re getting shickered with Timmy and the boys. Open wide because here comes Timmy and he’s in the crowd giving you Thank Got I’ve Hit the Bottom and its safe to say that he’s hit the top, the bottom and every part of us in between.
I took some friends tonight who’d never experienced You Am I. I never worried once if they were going to have a good time. Do you know why? YOUAMI are the Cream (King Island double variety, YUMMMM) and never the Crock. As I sit here now looking at my souvenir of Tim’s actual set list, one can only aspire to be the best in their respective fields as we go through life. Wanna know what Tim hand writes on the top of his fine wine/set list? ‘HOW GREAT ARE WE!’ Tim is, You Am I are, and it’s a rhetorical brag which is thoroughly deserved. YAI are the ultimate Rock Stars Sauvignon Dom Perignon with a quadruple Stoli chaser – and YEAH, hit me again Timmy!
