It was a night of firsts for me first night out to see a live band in Tassie for years, first time i'd ever stepped foot into the Trout and first time to see Enola Fall play live so I suppose I arrived with no expectations what so ever a perfect mindset for a review.
The gig began with fellow locals and comrades Fell to Erin, who were, as always brilliant. Sorry if the biased is obvious. I've seen them play live before and I'm a fan of their music and they didn't dissapoint.
Their set included tracks from the 2003 album 'April Monday' plus a peak at some new songs from their 5 track EP 'Stumble & Fall', scheduled for release on the 8th of May. Personally, I always think its a brave thing for a band to play songs that aren't known live. The crowd heard new tracks Meter Maid (which the band describe as a a rocking track about girls, parking fines and clearways) and Dirty Sneakers, which, in my opinion, were well received.
Then came Enola Fall. If the crowd at the Trout was any indication, the band have quite a loyal local following.
Perhaps the last chance to see the boys play live for 2006 dragged a few out of their loungerooms and into the venue. When Enola Fall took to the stage, the Trout began to feel a little cosy, but in a good way! The Trout was the perfect venue to farewell Enola Fall before lead singer Joe ventures back to the UK it felt intimate and appropriate the perfect venue for the band to say goodbye.
The crowd looked comfortable various positions of choice to view the band some using the chairs around the edge of the room and quite a few sat on the floor in front of the stage. At one point, I took a chair next to the speakers to watch the crowd I love to feel the music (sorry ears!) and it was really interesting to watch and try to gauge their reaction. In my personal opinion, they looked captivated.
We got the complete package an 11 or so song set which included tracks such as Raise an Army, Days of Dreams, Soldiers and Fighting Back Over the Same Ground with some of the set reuniting the original five members of Enola Fall on stage.
The cameras flashed as myself and others were madly clicking away trying to capture those moments of Enola Fall brilliance permanently at one point the flash, flash, flash reminded me of one of those paparazzi moments that are a common occurance in Hollywood and not Hobart!
Then came the first of two encores, with a mini mosh pit assembled by request of singer Joe for crowd favourite Jerusalem, and then Linc from Fell to Erin joining him on stage for I made a new friend and Like drowning.
With midnight upon us, and The Trout calling for last drinks, I left feeling sad that it had to end but I'm sure they'll be back on Hobart stages sometime in the future hey, I said goodbye to family and friends last year with the intention of setting up permanent residence in Bondi, Sydney and I'm back living in Hobart plans change, lets hope the fans of Enola Fall benefit in the future.
