Now I heard reports of The Lazys, as they played a warm up headline gig at Irish Murphy's in Salamanca the night before, which I had every intention of seeing but well, life happens.
The text I got the next day read “Lazys were fucking great... Good music and an awesome stage show in a confined space.”
Far out I thought, thinking about bailing on the gig, as I watched The Lazys on the stage at The Republic in North Hobart. The Lazys were amazing – good... no really, really good rock and roll in the Republic – a venue that I feel oozes music from its walls.
As I sit now looking at the set list, something gifted to me by one of The Lazy boys, which consists of black scrawled pen on a ripped piece of thick cardboard box, listing the 10 amazing songs and the handwritten note with the words “Main songwriters, front man – Leon, Lead Guitarist – Mat... The Lazys are an honest rock and roll band”, I recall a moment where I was coaxed by a friend to get closer to the stage only to have one of the guitarists jump from playing on top of the amp to nearly jumping on top of me.
So really, I could say be aware that The Lazys put on a killer stage show, but make sure you keep an eye on the guy with a guitar, standing on his amp! He loves to get down onto ground level without any notice...something which I think is an awesome move to get your audience involved. Their stage show worked perfectly in The Republic though (and from reports just as well at Irish), the air was thick with sweat and heavy, alcohol fueled breath but the windows were opened early in anticipation for that very reaction to these boys of rock from NSW.
I caught myself smiling (I don't usually smile at gigs) at this shirtless bunch of tattooed, muscle-ripped boys playing their “honest rock and roll” to quite a large crowd assembled. One thing I will say was the sound was loud – made me feel dizzy loud. Ear plugs were sold out, and trips to nearby petrol stations after The Lazys proved fruitless in my search for ear protection.
I made it back in time to see the stage being prepared for Something With Numbers. At this point the Republic was packed both inside and out the back. I always find it amazing how the staff there manage the people, serving drinks over the ear-splittingly loud music – Its a talent, that is sure. I wonder if during job interviews, they play music and rattle off drinks to test which potential staff are up for the challenge?
Something with Numbers were good, but I must admit The Lazys were more my kind of thing.
I have heard a SWN track on Triple J during a brief moment in my car, something about apples, I found myself saying to people before the gig began when we were talking about the group, proving my lack of knowledge about such a popular, commercially successful band.
Their set was good, they have a very polished stage show, the very large crowd was into it and the Merch guy was selling up a storm. It was an awesome gig – it was a first for me too – its not often that I enjoy the support more than the main event... and so much is written about the bigger bands - its nice to place a spotlight on those battling for recognition.
