Hobart now has a major Easter music festival to rival those on the mainland, with the inaugural Southern Roots festival set to rock the city this April.

And in a major coup, Southern Roots has secured massively influential US rockers the Pixies to headline the inaugural event. Led by enigmatic frontman Black Francis, the Pixies emerged from Boston in the mid-80s. Francis (vocals, guitar) hooked up with Kim Deal (bass), Joey Santiago (guitar) and Dave Lovering (drums) to write tracks like Debaser, Here Comes Your Man and Monkey Gone to Heaven which have won the band a worldwide cult following and inspired bands like Nirvana and fans like David Bowie.

The tension within the band came to a head when the Pixies broke up in 1993, but after more than a decade apart they reunited in 2004 and are coming to rock Hobart for the very first time this Easter.

To be held at the Royal Hobart Showgrounds on Saturday April 7, Southern Roots will also feature performances by Gomez, Wolfmother, The Lemonheads, The Vines, Ben Kweller, Tex Perkins and Tim Rogers, Angus and Julia Stone and Pnau with more to be announced soon.

More than 14,000 music fans are expected to flock to Southern Roots for what promises to be the biggest one-day music festival in Tasmania’s history, with an unprecedented line-up of international and Australian talent.

"The motivation behind it was that we could access a heap of international acts,’’ festival co-promoter Charles Touber said.

``It’s very hard to access any international acts in Tasmania, but we’ve got a very strong working relationship with Michael Chugg who is co-promoter of Blues and Roots. And our headliner is coming from the V Festival, so we’re very lucky that there’s two big Easter festivals that we can get international acts from.”

An internet-only allotment of discounted tickets will go on sale for 48 hours only from 9am Thursday February 8 right here on the Dwarf for $89 (plus booking fee).

General tickets will then go on sale from selected outlets on February 15 for $96 (plus booking fee).
