Melbourne’s My Trainwreck Of A Life have been working hard. Their debut album, an eleven track, self titled ball-tearer is nearing release, and a swag of shows are booked over the coming months in support of this. The band have developed their songs and their sound over the past 18 months, with regular demos, live recordings, and home videos used to hone the live sound of the band. Singer Jimma Hobson fronts the band with a powerful, gravely voice, and lyrics with content, while Guitarist Danny Hill melds wailing blues with aggressive picking, singing solos and heavy riffs. Tommy Lynch fills the sound with swirling organ and honky New Orleans Piano, while the rhythm section of Dan Zaccagnini on Bass and Ocker O’Connell on Drums sticks the punk and blues together with grooves that move between fat and funky, and downright brutal. While looking the part, the five don’t subscribe to the concept of the haircut maketh the band, and are not interested in the latest fashions and fads. Live, a rapid fire, full throttle show is always on the cards, relentlessly rocking. Punters have described the band as being like a young Spencer P Jones, while others have cited similarities to Clutch, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, and (less frequently) Scatterbrain. They will be joined on this fine Thursday by the exciting Kimbo Slice, $6 entry, doors 8.30pm.
