Tex Perkins and Charlie Owens barely knew each other when they cut the first album Sad But True with Don Walker in 1993. Their distinctively Australian yet dark and melancholic sound matured on stage and was reflected a couple of years later on their live album Monday Morning Coming Down.
Their musical pedigree is a who's who of Australia’s finest rock, punk and post-punk bands Cold Chisel, Beasts of Bourbon, the New Christs, Catfish, the Cruel Sea, the Dark Horses and Tendrils.
With the intent to start another album but no deadlines, the trio returned to the studio in March 2005. This followed four years of swapping tapes in the mail, developing material and getting the words right.
Their songs paint the backdrop to the lifestyle of the misunderstood urban drifter. Deliver wine soaked yarns with gruffly smooth vocals over sparse guitar and piano, they have created a contemporary Australian folk album.
So pull up a bar stool and witness the urban blues of Tex and Charlie when they close the season of The Famous Spiegeltent at Sydney Opera House.
